Single mom of preschooler twins and a school-aged child is behind on her electric bill. She was unable to secure childcare for the twins until yesterday due to overall lack of childcare for Bedford County. A new center opened in Moneta, and they are now enrolled. She is now looking hard for full-time work and has several leads; plus plans to enroll with CareerWorks. While seeking childcare so she can work, she fell behind on electric. A local nonprofit prevented disconnection with financial aid for an overdue $523 but another $640 is due by the end of the October and she will not be able to cover the upcoming bill. Once she secures work and receives her first check, she should be in good shape going forward.

I received a case where this mother's food stamp needs to be renewed. This mother has a two-month newborn, and a 5-year-old child. Today, her car got towed and her electricity went out. DSS was able to pledge to have the power restored. This mother does not have much food in the house, and desperately needs food for this weekend. She said that she could stay with her sister, but i do know that her sister has enough food for everyone in the house. Would anyone be willing to help this mother out with groceries for some days till she is able to physically go to a food pantry next week? Any non-perishable food staples, fresh produce and frozen meats or even a gift card for her to shop would be so much appreciated.

As of now there is a protective order, but the oldest child and mother are scared that the father will try and come back to their house. Single grandmother who is raising her four grandchildren by herself has been working with this case manager for some time now. Children have all had significant challenges that have placed them before the courts. This grandmother has always been there for her grandchildren since day one and even having some since they were born. She lives on a very fixed income and is need of some home repairs. Currently she needs flooring for her trailer as the flooring she has in her kitchen and dining area is ripped and heavily damaged. The subfloor is showing throughout some spots in the kitchen and dining area. Her living room had carpet and it was extremely worn down that it needed to be taken out and now the living room floor is just the subfloor. This grandmother has mentioned that having some flooring would make her home feel more like a home for her grandchildren. A concern is that after so long with the subfloor showing it could eventually become worn down and holes could appear which would then pose a safety risk for the children in the home.
