Story
The client is a single grandmother raising her granddaughter and grandson, ages 9 and 6, respectively. Thier father is incarcerated in San Diego. The mother lives in Canada and the children experienced intermittent homelessness when they were not living on the reservation in Canada.The father was arrested over a year ago, and the grandmother took them into her home in Lakeside. The children’s father totaled her car and was arrested for a DUI. She had to buy a new car. The grandmother works as a school nurse. Kinship Navigator helped the grandmother obtain Guardianship through Probate Court and CalWORKs for her grandson, the granddaughter was born in Canada and is not eligible for public assistance. I have provided the family emergency food and clothing resources. The client is behind on two car payments; however, she arranged with the car dealership to hold back one car payment until she can do her income taxes and settle an issue with the VA, regarding the loan for her previous house. The client is requesting cash assistance to pay her car loan the amount of $496.85, due by March 31 2025. If she does not make the payment, her car is at great- risk of being repossessed. If her need is met, she will be able to make her car payment, maintain her job and source of income, get the children to and from before and after school care, and meet their everyday needs. The client will have the capacity to get back on her feet. She has also taken a second job.
